Upon seeing the elegant former headquarters of the Superior Oil Co. in 2000, Andre Balazs fell in love and bought it virtually on the spot. By May 2002 the Carrara-marble-clad construction had become his second Standard hotel, this time in the heart of downtown LA. The Business Traveller calls it: A visual treat from the moment you step inside. But this 12-storey hotel and its 207 guest rooms far surpass the established corporate hotel paradigm: The grand lobby is partially a historic architectural landmark with 50s era ornaments such as a 15 time zone clock encased in stainless steel.
